Notes and Activities

Lesson 1: Theosis

Kurielaison means Lord have mercy.

Theosis means growing in the likeness of God.

Through Holy Qurbana we receive the body and the blood of Jesus Christ.

There are six diptychs in Holy Qurbana.

Lesson 2:Trusting in God

Israel fought against Canon. Deborah and Barak fought for Israel. Jabin is the king of Canon. Sisera is the commander of King Jabin's army. Israel won the battle. Jesus heals the paralyzed man in Capernaum. His friends carried him to Jesus. They get him to Jesus through the rooftop. He was healed.  Peter called out to Jesus while Jesus was walking on the water. With faith in Jesus Peter was able to walk on water though he was afraid. Sin means doing ungrateful things.

Lesson 3: The World to Come

In the parable of the Sower seed means the word of the god.

In rocky soil seeds didn't grow because they developed no roots. In good soil seeds grow because they developed good roads.

Seeds that fell on the rocky ground represent people who hear the word of God and not follow it.

Seeds that fell on the good soil represent those people who listen and follow Jesus' word.

During harvest weeds will be burnt and wheat will be gathered.

The final judgment is not a punishment but the result of our actions.

During final judgment good people go to heaven and bad people go to hades or hell.

Lesson 4:Jonah and Lord’s Kindness

Hades is a place for punishment of evil people or people who did Evil things.

God asked prophet Jonah to go to Nineveh and preach.

Because they were sinful.

He was disobedient and he went to Tarshish in a boat.

 A big storm came.

The sailors throw Jonah into the sea.

 A big fish ate jonah.

Jonah was inside the belly of the fish for 3 days and three nights.

He prayed he repented.

The fish spitted Jonah on the shore.

He went to Nineveh and preached to the people of Nineveh they repented and they were saved.

Jesus never sin.

We can ask for forgiveness through fast land and prayer.

Nineveh lent or fast is three days.

Nineveh lent or fast is for three days.

The same way Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights Jesus Christ was inside the heart of the Earth for three days and three nights.

So the number three is very important for Christians.

Great lent is for 50 days. Nineveh lent is for 3 days.

Nineveh lent comes before the great lent because it is a preparation for the great lent.

Jesus' crucifixion is remembered on Good Friday.

The resurrection is remembered on Easter Sunday.

The birthday of Jesus is remembered on Christmas Day December 25th.

Lesson 5: The Light of the World

Mayaltho is a Feast celebrated on February 2nd.

It is remembered to celebrate the entry of Jesus for the first time into the temple.

He was brought to the temple for the first time after 40 days of his birth.

His parents took him to the temple.

His parents were Mary and Joseph. St. Simeon and St. Anna were in the church waiting to see baby Jesus.

Parents gave two Turtle doves as a gift.

The name of the temple that Jesus went to for the first time is Jerusalem Temple.

A temple is a place of worshiping God.

Lesson 6: A story of Healing

The Physician is one who heals the sick doctor.

A miracle is an act of God no one can explain.

Holy unction is the sacrament of anointing someone with oil when that person is sick. Jesus Christ is the Great physician.

Holy Chrism is the oil used for baptism.

Jesus Christ healed the blind man in the city of Jericho.

His name was Martinus.

The anointing of sick people with oil when that person is not feeling well is called the sacrament of holy unction.

Lesson 7: Fallen from Grace

Free will is the gift from God for us to choose what we want to do.

Grace means God's kindness and his blessings in spite of being sinful.

Bad pride means showing self praise.

God created Adam and Eve in his image and placed them in a special place called Eden. He told them he can eat everything from the garden except from one tree; one special tree in the garden called the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. But Adam and Eve were disobedient. A snake told them to eat the fruit. And they did so. And, so they sinned. Sin means being ungrateful and doing against the will of God. When God found that Adam and Eve were disobedient, He threw them out of the Garden of the Eden.

The people of Babylon were building strong and large buildings to show how powerful they were. When God saw that they were doing this because of their bad pride, God stopped them from going even into greater sin. He confused their language so they may not understand one another's speech. So they were not able to finish the building of the tower, nor were they able to understand each other. So God punished them for being disobedient.

Jesus Died on the cross to defeat the death Adam and Eve brought into this world. When we develop bad pride, we do not feel a need for God, nor do we admit that God helped us in any way. And bad pride turn. People away from God.

Lesson 8

Malankara means the state of Kerala in India.

Ancestors are those who lived before us.

Oath means a declaration.

A successor is a person that follows another.

The name of our church is Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church or the Indian Orthodox Church. The church is more than 2000 years old. Jesus began his work on earth in Jerusalem. Jesus had 12 disciples. Saint Thomas is the apostle to India. He came to Kerala in AD52. Established eight churches. He was martyred in a place called Mylapore in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The state next to Kerala. The church in Kerala grew through many difficulties. The Great Declaration of freedom of the Church from other foreign powers, especially Latin Christians is called the Coonan Cross Oath. The Church believes St. Thomas is the first Catholicos of India. Catholicos means universal head. The current Catholicos is Marthoma Matthews III, who is the 92nd Catholicos.

Lesson 9

Abode of the Saints means together with God.

Intercede means to ask to pray for God for someone whom you love or for yourself.

Monastery is a place where monks live. Seminary is a school where people learn theology and get trained to become Achens.

The Malankara Orthodox Church has two Saints. Mar Gregorios of Parumala and St. Geevarghese Mar Dionysus Vattasseril, and then we also have our Saint from our Mother church, St. Eldo Mar Baselios.

Parumala Thirumani's life is an example for prayer in our life and showing kindness to others.

to be filled in....

Saint Yeldo Mar Baselius was born in 1593.This is currently near Mosul in Iraq. He went to India at the old age of 92 to help us stay close to faith even during difficult times. It was a very hard mission because if the Portuguese found out what St.Yeldo Mar Baselios was going to do, they would have hurt and even killed him. However, St. Baselios was not scared and came to India to take care of his sheep. He guided and helped to protect the church during a difficult time. The Great Saint died in India and is buried in Marthoma, Cheriapally in Kothamangalam, Kerala, India. He remind us to be an example for others by being strong in our faith.

Our Church has three great fathers., who are three Saints, who are also called 3 Holy Hierarchs. Saint John Chrysostom, St. Basil the Great, and Saint Gregory the Theologian.

Saint John was born in 347 AD at Antioch in Pleasant Day, Turkey. He helped the poor people. There is an order of Divine Liturgy called the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom which we use in celebrating Holy Qurbana in our Church.

Saint Basil was the Father who taught about the Holy Trinity the most, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.

St. Basil was born in Caesarea in 330 AD. He established a monastery, a place where the monks lived. He started hospital orphanages and schools for the sick, helpless and the poor.

Saint Gregory the Theologian was born in 329 AD. He studied with St. Basil the Great.

Saint Basil, his younger brother Gregory of Nicea and Gregory of Nazianzus are together called the Cappadocian Fathers. And they were inspired by the Holy Spirit to define the faith of the Holy Trinity the most.

The life of Saints help us to learn about the different qualities they had. Love and kindness, courage and strength. Then strong prayer, life and faith in God allow them to use their life to follow God's will.

Lesson 10

The faithful Christians who have died are called faithful departed.

Resurrection means to bring back to life after death.

Tomb is a special place where a person's body is buried after they die in ancient days.

Those who have died are at-rest, because we believe they are with God. God is love, and the faithful departed are with God. That is our belief.

Mary, Martha, and Lazarus lived in a place called Bethany. And they were friends with Jesus. One day Lazarus got very sick. That time, Jesus was not there. When Jesus finally arrived, Lazarus passed away and he had been in his tomb for four whole days. Martha, one of  Lazarus’s sisters ran to meet Jesus, and she said to Jesus; “If you were here, my brother wouldn't have died.” Jesus told her that her brother would come back to life. And then Jesus did something amazing. Jesus went to the tomb where they put Lazarus and many people followed him. Jesus asked them to open the tomb. Jesus prayed to God and said with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out. And what happened? Lazarus, who had been dead in the tomb, came out, came out alive, and that's a miracle. We celebrate this Saturday as Lazarus Saturday.

“God loved the world so much that he sent his Son Jesus to save us.”  Saint John said. We believe in the resurrection of the dead and a new life in the world to come. There is a red carpet in the middle of the church. It is to remember that the departed faithful are alive and praying with us.

Lesson 11 to 14

After raising Lazarus from the dead Jesus went to Jerusalem. So the people welcomed him like a king. Jesus rode on a donkey and went to Jerusalem. When people saw Jesus, they were happy. They put their clothes on the ground and some took the branches from trees and put them on the ground. And everybody shouted with joy. They said “Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed is High, who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest”. The triumphant entry of our Lord into Jerusalem is known as Palm Sunday. The Syriac word for this feast is OOshaino, which means Hosanna. Because he was received as a great King. To commemorate this event, we celebrate Hosanna. The branches of palm trees symbolize Jesus' victory over the devil and earth. The word Hosanna means Ooshaino means “Save, I pray”, or “Save, now”. Commemorate means to honor or remember someone or something in a very special way. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the Holy Week.

But sometimes Jesus was very angry. When he saw that the Temple, which is the worship place for God, is not kept holy, and is kept unclean, he became very angry. He kicked them out and even flipped the tables. This made some people very angry, and they decided to kill Jesus.

Jewish families celebrate Passover because it reminds them of God's love towards them and how he saved their ancestors from being slaves in Egypt. Very long time ago. When Jewish people lived as slaves in Egypt, they were tortured by their leader known as Pharaoh. Moses asked Pharaoh to free God's people. But he didn't listen. So, God sent ten plagues to punish Egyptians. Finally, God asked Jewish people to take special blood from a lamb and put it on their doors and windows of their houses. Which will protect them and their families. The first-born child of every Egyptian and the first-born animal from families that didn't have the special blood died that night. This was the 10th plague. The people of Israel were freed and with Moses as their leader, they left Egypt and went to the new land God promised called the cannon. So, this is known as Passover. Moses gave them 10 commandments on their way.

Jesus wanted to celebrate Passover with his disciples. That evening, two of his disciples, Peter and John, got everything ready for Passover. So while they were eating, Jesus took some bread and said a special prayer and then broke it into these pieces. And he gave the bread to his disciples and told them to eat. He said this was his body. Later Jesus took a cup of wine, prayed, and gave it to his disciples to drink. He said this was his blood. This is the new Passover where the Lamb is Jesus Christ Himself. He asked everyone who'd believe him to do this “in remembrance of me”.

Jesus knew what was coming, and so he went to the garden of The Garden of Gethsemane to pray to God the Father.

The Friday of Holy Week is called Great Friday or Good Friday. On this death, our Lord Jesus Christ was put to death on the cross. This day is special because Jesus died on the cross to save us from death. At church on Great Friday, you can notice that the cloth covering of the author is black. All the colorful things in church are gone.

Holy art thou, oh God, holy art, thou Almighty, Holy art thou immortal, crucified for us, have mercy on us. This is called a trisagion.

On Good Friday we have two processions. Jesus died in a place called Golgotha. So, we have a procession around the church on Great Friday to remember this. And there is one more procession where we remember the event of his body being taken down from the cross to be buried. And at the end of the Great Friday, there is a special moment where everyone bows down and kisses the cross. This is a way to thank God for what He did for us.

Jesus was crucified with the 2 thieves, 1 thief on the right hand, one thief on the left. During our Good Friday service in the church, we have song of two thieves which remind us that our prayer should be like the good thief on the right side of Jesus

After, Jesus died on the cross. He went to the sheol after crucifixion which is where all who had departed before Christ's resurrection are waiting. The church celebrates this as Holy Saturday. After Jesus died on the cross on Friday. He resurrected. After three days on Sunday, which is known as Easter. Saint Paul says. If Jesus was not resurrected from the dead, then our preaching and your faith is fruitless. During Easter, we greet each other By saying. And the response is. Indeed, he is Listen. We remember the resurrection every Sunday through Holy Qurbana.

Lesson 15

Council is a group of church leaders, which discuss something very important.

When people say things against the church belief, It is called Heresy..

Ecumenical means when all Christians come together.

When Christianity first started to spread the Holy Spirit held the apostles and church leaders to teach people about God. The church grew and spread, but some leaders started to teach something that is different from what Jesus and the church taught. And these wrong teachings are called Heresies. So, the church council met to defend and define the true Church faith.

The first council was the Council of Nicaea in 325 ADT.  he second Council is the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD. The 3rd and the final council is the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD.

The Nicene Creed was first formed during the Council of Nicaea. and during the Council of Constantinople. The creed was revised.

The first Heresy was brought by Arius. The second Heresy was brought by a Bishop named Macedonius and the Third heresy was brought by a Bishop named Nestorius.

Lesson 16

Righteous life means living and acting according to the will of God. Our church ancestors are called forefathers. Renew means give fresh life or revive. As Christians, we are Israel, which means God's people. Through baptism, we became united as children of God. God made a promise to Abraham that he would make him a great nation. And in him all the tribes of the earth shall be blessed. God loved Abraham because he was a righteous man and told Abraham that this promise would also be to his son Isaac and Isaac’s son Jacob. Abraham trusted the Lord's promise and followed his will.

We remember our forefathers in prayers who rest in the bosom of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Those who have passed away and are waiting with us for the second coming. In the Nicene creed we say that the lord shall come again in His great glory, to judge both the living and the dead, whose Kingdom shall have no end. This is one of the pillars of our faith that gives us hope.

O Thou full of mercy, renew thy creation at the resurrection. Oh Lord, comfort and absolute our departed ones, who died with hope in thee, and await thy coming. O Lord, make them dwell in the bosom of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. May the living and the departed together cry out. ‘Blessed is He, who has come, and is to come, and give life to the dead. Amen.

Miaphysitism (/maɪˈæfɪsaɪtɪzəm, miː-/) is the Christological doctrine that holds Jesus, the Incarnate Word, is fully divine and fully human, in one nature. Normal people may see this as two different natures, because they cannot comprehend the divinity.
