"Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Luke10:42
Martha and Mary in Bible
Martha and Mary and their brother Lazarus were friends of Jesus. Their account in the Gospels indicate that they weren't just friends; they considered Jesus as a part of their immediate family. They are mentioned in three incidents in Bible.
- Jesus at Martha and Mary’s house. Jesus gave loving instructions to Martha on what indeed is needed in life. (Luke 10:38-42)
- Martha and Mary in great grief. Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. Martha made some very strong statements of faith. (John 11:1-44)
- Mary anointing Jesus with expensive fragrance oil. When Judas criticized Mary, Jesus defended her. (John 12:1-8)
Important Bible Verses
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)
She said to him “Yes Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world”. (John 11:27)
“Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her” (Matt. 26:13; Mark 14:9)
Lessons Learned
- Our practice of religion should not merely focus on practice and adherence to rituals and doctrines outwardly; but rather it should lead us to the purification of our mind.
- All prayers, practices, and rituals in our church are organized to help us through our journey in attaining what Mary has attained. But we ourselves have to work hard using our mind and intellect, because only those pure in heart shall see the God.
- Meditate on word of God, ask for God’s mercy to purify our heart, to remove the dust, the mask that prevents us from entering into his kingdom, and be able to enjoy the glorious company of angels and saints.
- Pray, beseech, and cry aloud to God to be merciful to us that we should have the will to carry out his will as we pray in Lord’s Prayer.
